The Makanaaloha Group is proud to honor Lo'ea, George Lanakilakeikiahiali`i Na'ope, in this hula competition, the 3rd Annual George Na'ope Keiki Hula Competition, to be held at the Modesto Centre Plaza in Modesto, California August 14 - 15, 2010 (Saturday & Sunday).  This is the only annual keiki hula competition held here on the Mainland US.  Come and join us to be a part of showcasing the future of the hula tradition, our keiki.  A special mahalo to Hawaiianfeathers.com for sponsoring this event.  The aloha shared by the Makanaaloha Group & Hawaiianfeathers.com makes this event possible to bring to you.

Rick Makanaaloha Kia'imeaokekanaka San Nicolas and the Makanaaloha Group are proud to be the co-founder of this very special event along with George Na'ope.  With his passing this October 26, 2009, it is even more important to me to continue this competition in his honor.  In 2004 when I asked Uncle George about holding a hula competition here in California in his honor, we spoke about a keiki competition first.  Uncle George told me, "Why not do a competition for only men?".  I thought about that for a moment and replied to him "You know, you are right.  "There is not enough emphasis put on the kāne in hula and if I do this event, it can only help".  So I did start the George Na'ope Kāne Hula Festival in 2005, and this George Na'ope Keiki Hula Competition in 2008.  So with that, I have his blessings, his permission to use him name in our event, and the privilege holding the first and only annual kāne hula competition and keiki hula competition bearing his name in the world.

To Our Honored Judges for this event, we are grateful for their commitment of time, knowledge, aloha, and support of Uncle George Na'ope and this event.  Our Judges for hula confirmed this year will be Chinky Māhoe, Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, & Keala Ching.  Our Judge for 'ōlelo Hawai'i is 'Iokepa De Santos.

The keiki group competition will also challenge the skills of the keiki in group hula kahiko, and group hula 'auana.  If hula implements are used in your group hula kahiko performance, the hula implements must be a traditional Hawaiian Implement.  If hula implements are used for your hula `auana, the hula implement may be other than traditional, since the hula 'auana is considered the "modern" version of hula.

Koho'ia (meaning the "Chosen Chant")  Each year in our Kumu de-briefing the new mele for the following year will be announce for your consideration, and that mele will be the required mele to use in your presentation of hula kahiko to enter.  This year our Koho'ia mele is composed by our language judge, 'Iokepa De Santos.  'Iokepa has offered to compose a new mele for this event each year to continue this category on our hula competition.

The Koho'ia mele for 2010 is written in honor of King Kamehameha.  The mele, Ka Wānana A Pai'ea, a mele about his first 5 years of the life of Kamehameha the Great.  This chant will be sent to you upon your entry of this competition in the hula Koho'ia.  I will also make available the contact information for 'Iokepa De Santos and he will make his time available to you for any questions you may have to prepare this mele.

The mele will only be performed in hula kahiko, the choreography of the mele and the melody, will be yours do produce.  When you enter this category, either in the Kāne or Keiki competition, you may choose what division you wish to perform this hula kahiko in.  You may choose the kaikamahine group or solo hula kahiko, keiki kāne, and kāne group or solo hula kahiko as well.  Only one performance is required within your halau to participate in the Koho'ia category.  Since this is an optional category to enter, there will be one overall award given to the performance scoring the highest points (The Makanaaloha Award).  Since the points scored in the optional Koho'ia category and any division can perform this mele, the points will not be included in the overall halau score towards the George Na'ope Perpetual Award.
