Hawaiianfeathers.com is a website that took much time to prepare to bring the to the public. This website offers a large selection and collection of Hawaiian handmade feather leis of all types. This collection of the art of Old Hawai`i is done by Rick Makanaaloha Kia'imeaokekanaka San Nicolas. Every feather is selected, pulled, sorted, cut, trimmed, hand tied, hand stitched, the work from start to finish is done by him. You will see Hawaiianfeathers.com at many of the Polynesian events all over the U.S. Rick is a teacher of Hawaiian feather lei making and has taught workshops in California, Hawai'i, Washington, Oregon and Japan. Rick is a self taught feather lei maker and taught himself this old art of Hawai'i through the book "Feather Lei As An Art", written by the true feather lei Masters, Auntie Mary Louise Kekuewa and her daughter Paulette Kahalepuna. Without their years of dedication to keeping this old art of featherwork alive for Hawai'i, and the writing of their book, none of this would have been possible for Rick.
Furthering his knowledge of true traditional featherwork as done in Old Hawai'i, he was asked by Kumu Hula John R. Kaha'i Topolinski to be a student of his to learn all of his traditional teachings of Hawai'i. With great honor, Rick accepted Kumu Kaha'i as his Kumu. Kumu Kaha'i has learned from a great line of Kupuna and Masters in featherwork. The names include Mary Kawena Pukui, Aunty Birdie Reist, Helen Ayat, Namahana Maioho, and Lokalia Montgomery. Kumu Kaha'i also has vast knowledge from extensive research into the private collections at the Bishop Museum and the Hawai'i State archives, as the Curator of the featherwork in the Bishop Museum.
Hawaiianfeathers.com also offers a complete selection of handmade hula implements. Rick is an ipu and ipu heke maker and does all of the work himself. The other hula implements that are offered are handmade by friends in Hawai`i. Each of the implement makers hand select the raw product used from Hawaiian land. Therefore, Hawaiianfeathers.com can stand behind the quality and craftsmanship of their product.
Hawaiianfeathers.com carries a complete selection of feathers for the feather lei makers, kahili makers, and feathers for complete Tahitian costumes. All sizes, all colors, loose or strung, rare and hard to find feathers can all be found here.
